Since its unveiling in 2021, Windows 11 has been steadily making its mark in the operating system landscape, with over 400 million monthly active devices now running it. However, it appears that Windows 11’s adoption rate is notably slower compared to its predecessor, Windows 10. According to a report by Windows Central, citing internal Microsoft data, the operating system is projected to reach 500 million monthly active devices by early 2024. Notably, it took Windows 11 over two years to reach the 400 million mark, while Windows 10 achieved the same milestone in just over a year.

Microsoft has set “modest” expectations for Windows 11’s usage base but has consistently exceeded these internal goals. In fact, Windows 11 has outperformed the company’s initial user-base expectations. This success is a testament to the significant changes and new features that Windows 11 introduced, including design enhancements like a new boot screen, startup sound, and improved widgets.

In contrast, Windows 10, which was introduced in June 2015, reached 400 million monthly active devices within just over a year and eventually grew to one billion users by early 2020.

The slower adoption rate of Windows 11 can be attributed to its stringent hardware requirements. Unlike Windows 10, which was offered as a limited free upgrade from Windows 7 and Windows 8, Windows 11’s compatibility was restricted to CPUs released from 2018 onward due to the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) requirement. These hardware constraints have contributed to the slower migration to the new operating system.

Despite its slower pace, Windows 11 continues to evolve with recent updates, including the integration of Microsoft’s AI personal assistant, Copilot. Looking ahead, Microsoft is gearing up for the release of Windows 12, expected to arrive in 2024 as the next major iteration of the Windows operating system.
