In a groundbreaking development, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is poised to spearhead the second day of the AI Safety Summit, held at the iconic Bletchley Park. During this event, he will extend a warm welcome to esteemed senior leaders and facilitate two pivotal sessions.

The initial session will hone in on international priorities concerning artificial intelligence (AI) in the upcoming five years. This gathering will comprise a select group of senior representatives from governments and organizations across the globe, including the United States, European Union, Italy, France, Germany, Australia, and the United Nations. Additionally, there will be virtual participation from countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Singapore. Mr. Sunak’s primary objective is to advocate for global responsibility in addressing the risks associated with AI and to harness its boundless opportunities. The group will delve into discussions about the essential international collaborations required for AI’s development in the years to come.

The second session is set to host prominent figures from the forefront of AI, alongside representatives from academia and civil society. This session will revolve around the concrete actions necessary in the coming year to ensure AI safety. Distinguished attendees will include leaders of major AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, Microsoft, Meta, and xAI. During this session, there will be deliberations on plans for state-backed testing and evaluation of AI models before their release.

A week prior to this summit, Mr. Sunak introduced the UK’s AI Safety Institute, which will play a pivotal role in examining, evaluating, and testing new AI technologies to inform both national and international policymaking.

Under the UK’s leadership, a remarkable milestone was achieved as 28 countries, including the United States, China, and the European Union, came to a historic consensus on the opportunities, risks, and the pressing need for international cooperation in addressing frontier AI. These are the AI systems where we confront the most urgent and perilous risks.

“I firmly believe that technological advances like AI will be the most transformative for the future of our children and grandchildren,” emphasized Mr. Sunak in his anticipation of the summit. “It is our responsibility to ensure that AI evolves in a safe and responsible manner, identifying and mitigating its risks at an early stage. The inaugural global AI Safety Summit, led by the UK, has already witnessed the participation of major AI powers in signing the groundbreaking Bletchley Declaration. This signifies their commitment to shared responsibility in addressing AI-related risks and a collective endeavor to enhance frontier AI safety and research. While the UK has been at the forefront of this global dialogue on AI safety, it is imperative to recognize that no single country can tackle these risks in isolation. I eagerly await further discussions with our partners, so that together, we can ensure the safety of our people and secure the benefits of AI for future generations.”
